Every student must complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement activities as part of the requirements for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). The purpose of the community involvement requirement is to encourage students to develop awareness and understanding of civic responsibility and of the role they can play and the contributions they can make in supporting and strengthening their communities.
The guidelines for activities which would qualify towards the 40 hours community involvement can be found in this 40 Hour Community Volunteer Information Sheet.
Students may begin accumulating hours the summer between grade 8 and starting grade 9. A minimum of 40 hours must be completed by grade 12. These completed hours are to be recorded on the Completion of Community Hours Activities Sheet.
